Remember, Remember the Fourth of November .. the day the great democracy of the United States freely elected Socialism.
.... I don't think I can remember an election when the media pushed so hard for the election of a candidate ( of course I can remember last election when the media made its hardest push ever against a candidate ) ... but then again this was an election that held the promise of a big first ... and big firsts make big stories and specials, basically a media heaven ... so here's my take on firsts ... yeah they're great and wonderful and a real tangible sign of progress towards a more egalitarian society ... however, firsts come naturally ... even if one first is passed up another opportunity will eventually present itself ... what is important is not the achievement of a first ... but the quality of the first that is achieved ... a good first guarantees seconds and thirds ... but a bad first promotes the possibility of an only ... and makes it more difficult for a good second to undo the damage ... will Obama be a good first? I honestly hope so ...
... however, I think that this historic first should be overshadowed by the scary situation this election has left federal government ... there are two branches now dominated by the same party ... there is an opportunity for all three branches to become democrat-dominated ... combine that with a lack of media criticism because of the media-favored candidate in the White House ... suddenly for all practical purposes our government becomes an official one party system lacking checks and balances with the Republicans, Libertarians, Independents and other Third Parties suddenly reduced to the "President's Loyal Opposition" ... free to bitch but not really do anything policy-wise ...
... so what reassurances do we have that this will not be the case? Nancy Pelosi's word that Democrats will be "bipartisan" ... pardon me if I'm still skeptical ..
..
... anyways ... as expected ... President-elect Obama is already scaling back his election promises ... I just hope that he wises up and becomes more than a rubber stamp for his party's policies ... I mean for all his faults, Bush was stubborn ... he had his own ideas of what should happen and did not just bend to Congressional will ... and that's what makes a good executive in my opinion ....
***On the Brighter Side: No recounts or bitching and moaning about the Electoral College ... even though I think McCain conceded a bit to early ... but it was a fairly smooth election
... I will miss the general distrust of the federal government that accompanied the media ill-favor toward the Bush administration .... sadly with the close of this election it seems the sheep will go back to calmly grazing away no matter how many wolves are in their midst ....

Yay Uncertainty and a lack of well deserved fear that the media should be instilling but won't be!
